Tata Punch Takes The Number One Position
The Tata Punch topped India’s passenger vehicle sales chart in August 2026 with 21,320 units. In the same month last year, Tata sold 10,704 units of the Punch, meaning the model recorded an impressive 99 per cent year-on-year increase. Its sales performance helped it comfortably take the top spot ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R finished second with 20,180 units in August 2026. The model sold 14,552 units during the same period last year, resulting in a 39 per cent year-on-year increase. Despite missing the top position, the Wagon R remained one of the strongest performers in the market.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift was even closer to the leaders, finishing third with 19,832 units. Its August 2025 sales stood at 12,385 units, giving the hatchback a strong 60 per cent annual growth. Only 1,488 units separated the Punch from the Swift, showing how competitive the top three positions were.
Fronx And Ertiga Strengthen Maruti’s Line-Up
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx secured fourth position after recording 18,730 units in August 2026. Compared with 12,422 units sold in August 2025, the Fronx registered a 51 per cent year-on-year increase. The crossover has continued to attract buyers since its launch in 2023 and remains an important model in Maruti Suzuki’s line-up.
The Ertiga occupied fifth position with 18,516 units. Its sales were almost unchanged from the 18,445 units recorded in August 2025. Although the year-on-year growth was effectively flat, the Ertiga still managed to remain among India’s 10 best-selling cars, underlining the continuing demand for practical family-oriented MPVs.
Nexon And Dzire Finish Almost Neck And Neck
The Tata Nexon finished sixth with 18,431 units during August 2026. It sold 14,004 units in August 2025, resulting in a 32 per cent year-on-year increase. The Nexon’s strong performance ensured that Tata Motors had two models inside the top 10, alongside the segment-leading Punch.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire was only 13 units behind the Nexon, with 18,418 units sold. Its sales increased from 16,509 units in August 2025, representing 12 per cent annual growth. The Dzire’s performance also allowed it to remain India’s best-selling sedan during the month, despite strong competition from SUVs and hatchbacks.
Hyundai Creta And Baleno Remain Popular Choices
The Hyundai Creta finished eighth with 16,288 units in August 2026. Its sales were slightly higher than the 15,924 units recorded a year earlier, translating into a modest 2 per cent year-on-year increase. While its growth rate was among the lowest in the top 10, the Creta continued to maintain a strong position in the SUV market.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno took ninth place with 15,746 units, compared with 12,549 units in August 2025. This resulted in a healthy 25 per cent year-on-year increase. With the updated Baleno now bringing additional features and other changes, its sales performance could receive further attention in the coming months.
Mahindra Scorpio Completes The Top 10
The Mahindra Scorpio rounded off the August 2026 top 10 with 15,576 units. The SUV recorded 9,840 units in August 2025, meaning its sales climbed by 58 per cent year on year. This made the Scorpio one of the fastest-growing models in the list and helped Mahindra secure representation among the country’s 10 best-selling cars.
The Scorpio’s performance is particularly notable given the strong competition in India’s SUV segment. Its rugged design, commanding road presence and established reputation continue to attract buyers. The model’s 58 per cent annual growth was better than most vehicles in the chart, with only the Tata Punch, Swift and Fronx recording higher percentage increases.
Maruti Suzuki Dominates The Overall Top 10
Maruti Suzuki had the strongest presence in the August 2026 rankings, with six models making the top 10. The Wagon R, Swift, Fronx, Ertiga, Dzire and Baleno together recorded 111,422 units during the month. This gives the company a significant share of the overall sales volume represented by the top 10 models.
Tata Motors followed with the Punch and Nexon, which together contributed 39,751 units. Hyundai’s Creta and Mahindra’s Scorpio completed the remaining positions.
