Yamaha YZF-R2 Launched: Yamaha has officially rolled out the new YZF-R2 in India, bringing the R-Series of bikes with a new lightweight sports bike aimed at those who seek more performance without venturing into a much larger engine class.
The price of the motorcycle begins at ₹2.30 lakh ex-showroom and makes Yamaha the first brand to launch in the 200cc category in India. It will be available for delivery starting from mid-September 2026.
The Yamaha YZF-R2 features new supersport styling, a newly engineered 204cc motor, riding modes, traction control and a TFT display. This comes in three variants, with the top-spec R2 M offering several premium features. The R2 is a curious addition to the R15 range, ranking an interesting middle-ground between the R15 and the R20 range with 26.5 PS, sporty styling and light weight.

New 204cc Engine Produces 26.5 PS
Yamaha YZF-R2 motorcycle is available in the standard model at a price of ₹2,30,500. Available in Metallic Black or Dark Bluish Gray. The mid-range YZF-R2 Quick Shifter version is priced at ₹2,39,500 in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue colour options, whereas the top-of-the-line YZF-R2 M version has a price tag of ₹2,53,000 and is also available in Metallic Gray color. All prices are ex-showroom.
Yamaha has announced that launches will commence from mid-September 2026 via its network of Blue Square dealerships. It is also the first market in the world to get the new R2, adding to Yamaha’s significance in the Indian motorcycle lineup. The bike is positioned between the smaller Yamaha R15 and the larger Yamaha R-Series motorcycles.
New 204cc Engine Produces 26.5 PS
The Yamaha YZF-R2’s largest mechanical feature is its newly designed 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-valve, DOHC petrol engine. It produces a maximum of 26.5 PS at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm of peak torque at 8,000rpm. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox and gets an assist and slipper clutch.
Yamaha has also utilized a finger-follower rocker arm system with Diamond-Like Carbon coating, technology which it developed for its larger performance motorcycles. The system keeps the friction and moving weight of the valvetrain to a minimum, the company states. It’s fuel injected and uses E20 fuel, and has been engineered to offer high power output with a relatively light motorcycle.
Lightweight Chassis and Sporty R-Series Design
The YZF-R2 uses the same Yamaha styling language as the R-Series some years ago, and has a compact fairing, sleek and sharp bodywork, and front profile. A bi-functional LED headlamp with LED position lights surrounds the motorcycle, with an LED tail lamp providing the rear lighting.
The aerodynamic bodywork brings a proper supersport look, rather than a typical commuter-based look, to the R2. Another big draw is the lightweight construction. Yamaha’s kerb weight is 149kg, and the bike’s frame is made of a steel-tube diamond, with 17-inch alloy wheels and dual-channel ABS.
An upside-down fork is used on the front, and a linked-type Monocross suspension system is used on the rear. Being lightweight and small should make the R2 easier to manoeuvre than many of its bigger capacity sports bike cousins.
5-Inch TFT Display and Riding Modes
The Yamaha YZF-R2 features a 5-inch full-colour TFT instrument cluster which shows key riding data. Y Yamaha also provides connected functionality via Y-Connect, and electronic rider assistance features make the bike more versatile in varying terrain.
Yamaha Ride Control offers three riding modes: Street, Sport and Rain. These modes enable the motorcycle’s operation to be modified to suit riding conditions and preference. Another inclusion is traction control, providing an extra degree of electronic support in less-than-ideal road conditions.
Quick Shifter and R2 M Get Extra Features
The second type is called the YZF-R2 Quick Shifter and features a bi-directional quickshifter. This enables quicker gear changes without having to push the clutch for each shift, adding a more performance-oriented feel to the motorcycle. The feature is also included with the top-spec R2 M.
The R2 M features top-of-the-range features like adjustable front suspension, adjustable clutch and brake levers, a Smart Key system, and a faux-suede seat. It also has some extra styling touches: a 3D embossed emblem, silver-finished swingarm and a shot-blasted muffler end cap, making the flagship version a more unique finish.

The new R2 has a length of 1,980mm, a width of 700mm and a height of 1140mm. It is 170mm of ground clearance, 1,340mm of wheelbase, and an 810mm seat height. A 12-litre fuel tank is used on the motorcycle, which is equipped with 100/80-17 front and 140/70R17 rear tubeless tyres.
The motorcycle has dual-channel ABS on the rear 220mm disc and a front 282mm disc for braking. The suspension features a 37mm upside-down front fork and a linked-type Monocross rear end. Yamaha’s aim has been to keep the motorcycle agile and manageable, with these specifications coming into play as part of that effort, along with the 149kg kerb weight.
