The Indian automobile market opened the calendar year 2025 with a mixed performance across the agricultural and light commercial mobility sectors. In particular, the 3-wheeler and tractor segments, vital to rural and urban last-mile transportation and agricultural mechanization respectively, reflected nuanced trends in demand, influenced by seasonal factors, macroeconomic conditions, and product innovation. This report summarizes the brandwise performance of major players in these two key segments for January 2025.

3-Wheeler Segment Overview

The 3-wheeler market saw moderate growth in January 2025, supported by increasing demand in urban and semi-urban areas for affordable last-mile connectivity. The segment’s growth was also fuelled by the expanding penetration of electric 3-wheelers, particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where cost-conscious customers are turning toward low-maintenance and fuel-efficient alternatives.

Top Performing Brands

  1. Bajaj Auto
Bajaj Auto maintained its strong leadership in the 3-wheeler market. The brand leveraged its vast distribution network and diversified product offerings to remain the top contributor in both passenger and cargo 3-wheelers. Bajaj’s RE series continued to dominate, with its CNG and diesel variants performing well in urban areas, while its growing e-3W segment began to make headway in select states.
  2. Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd
Piaggio, known for its Ape range, held the second spot, showing resilience with its range of cargo 3-wheelers and a rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) lineup. The company witnessed steady traction in cargo transport solutions and benefited from government incentives on EVs.
  3. Mahindra Electric & Mahindra Last Mile Mobility
Mahindra continued its push in the electric 3-wheeler space through the Treo and Alfa brands. With a strong presence in passenger e-rickshaw variants, Mahindra experienced a notable YoY rise in unit sales. Strategic tie-ups with fleet aggregators and financing partners helped boost their outreach.
  4. TVS Motor Company
TVS’s King series, especially its LPG and CNG variants, remained popular in southern and western India. The brand is gradually adapting to the e-3W trend and has shown pilot launches in a few states, though their electric footprint is still developing.
  5. Others (including Atul Auto, YC Electric, and regional players)
Smaller players and regional EV brands such as YC Electric saw a boost in EV 3-wheeler demand in rural belts. Atul Auto continued with moderate performance but is poised for stronger growth if supply-side constraints are resolved.

Tractor Segment Overview

The tractor industry experienced a soft start in January 2025 due to a combination of factors including high base effect, unseasonal rainfall in parts of India, and marginal delays in the rabi crop harvest cycle. However, overall rural sentiment remained stable with positive prospects due to strong Kharif output, government subsidies, and expectations of a normal monsoon.

Leading Brands Performance

  1. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M)
Mahindra Tractors remained the clear market leader, backed by a wide range of models across HP categories. The brand maintained a high trust quotient among farmers, and its aggressive outreach through financing and service support paid dividends. Mahindra’s Swaraj brand also contributed significantly to overall volumes, especially in northern states.
  2. TAFE (Tractors and Farm Equipment Ltd) – Massey Ferguson & Eicher
TAFE saw steady performance with its Massey Ferguson range, known for durability and fuel efficiency. Eicher-branded tractors under the same group performed well in low- and mid-HP segments, with high acceptance in western and central India.
  3. Sonalika International
Sonalika continued its growth momentum, focusing on exports and high-HP segment demand domestically. Their fuel-efficient models and innovation in technologically advanced tractors (including AC cabin tractors) gained traction.
  4. Escorts Kubota Ltd
Escorts, now operating under the Escorts Kubota banner, saw stable demand for its Powertrac and Farmtrac ranges. With Kubota’s global engineering support, the brand is increasingly targeting premium and export markets while maintaining strong domestic visibility.
  5. John Deere
Known for its premium offerings, John Deere showed consistent performance in higher HP segments and regions with large farm holdings. The company’s emphasis on mechanization and digital farming technologies added to its appeal among progressive farmers.
  6. New Holland
New Holland tractors maintained their niche in the 50+ HP segment. Though facing competition from domestic brands, their modern design and multi-application capabilities ensured continued demand in certain pockets.
  7. Others (Force Motors, VST Tillers, Captain Tractors, etc.)
Smaller brands like VST and Captain focused on compact and specialized tractors for horticulture and inter-row farming. These brands performed moderately but are expected to benefit from the shift toward precision agriculture.

Retail Tractor Sales Report January 2025 93 381 Units Sold with Mahindra Leading the Market fc9c24bb52
  • Electrification in 3-Wheelers: EV adoption is accelerating in the 3-wheeler segment, with state subsidies and lower total cost of ownership (TCO) driving customer decisions. However, the tractor industry remains largely diesel-driven, with electric models still in pilot phases.
  • Financing & Government Support: Both sectors benefited from government-backed financing schemes and rural infrastructure investments. Subsidies under the FAME scheme boosted EV sales, while agriculture subsidies under state government programs supported tractor procurement.
  • Export Potential: Tractor exports grew marginally, with Indian OEMs expanding their footprint in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. 3-wheeler exports remained stable, with Bajaj and Piaggio leading the charge.
  • Challenges Ahead: Rising interest rates and commodity prices could affect margins, while rural inflation might delay purchasing decisions. Both segments also face increasing pressure to innovate toward cleaner energy solutions.
